Canada gains 25,000 jobs in May, but unemployment rate in British Columbia creeps up to 7.5%
Statistics Canada reported Friday that Canada gained 25,000 jobs in May, the fifth consecutive monthly increase. The June 4, 2010 Labour Force Survey further reported:
- The national unemployment rate was unchanged at 8.1%.
- Since the start of the upward trend in July 2009, employment in Canada has risen by 1.8% or 310,000.
- Full-time employment increased by 67,000 in May, partly offset by losses of 43,000 in part time. Since July 2009, virtually all employment gains have been in full time.
- The number of private sector employees increased by 43,000 in May, while there were 28,000 fewer self-employed workers.
- Industries with notable employment increases in May were transportation and warehousing; health care and social assistance; public administration; and agriculture.
- Employment was up in Ontario, Alberta, Newfoundland and Labrador as well as Nova Scotia. However, employment declined in British Columbia and Prince Edward Island. BC lost 10,000 jobs while PEI lost 1,900.
- The unemployment rate in BC increased from 7.3% in April to 7.5% in May.
